Lube/Oil/Filter

The life-blood of your engine, engine oil, consists of various weight mineral or synthetic oils combined with additives for engine protection. Oils may come in single or multi-grades and meet various oil performance standards.

Engine oil lubricates, cleans, and cools critical parts of the engine. The oil's additives also help to suspend dirt, where it can be drained at the next oil change.

We recommend that you follow the manufacturer's suggested time interval/mileage for scheduled oil and filter changes. 5000 kilometers or 3 months is a good guideline to follow. An oil change also involves the changing of your car's oil filter.

An oil/filter change at Scotia Tires Services includes a 15 point inspection of your vehicle, including:

  • Coolant

  • Transmission Fluid

  • Power Steering

  • Drive Belts

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is the process by which air is cooled and dehumidified. The air conditioning in your car, your home and your office all work the same way. Even your refrigerator is, in effect, an air conditioner

Basically, air conditioning systems operate on the principles of evaporation and condensation. At our Cole Harbour location we service all aspects of your air conditioning, charging and parts replacement as required.

Here are some general troubleshooting tips:

No Cool Air

- Loose or broken drive belt

- Inoperative compressor or slipping compressor clutch

- Defective expansion valve

- Clogged expansion valve, receiver-drier or liquid refrigerant line

- Blown fuse

- Leaking component: any of the parts listed above or one of the A/C lines, hoses or seals

Insufficient Cool Air

- Low refrigerant charge

- Loose drive belt

- Slipping compressor clutch

- Clogged condenser

- Clogged evaporator

- Slow leak in system

- Partially clogged filter or expansion valve

Most A/C repairs are best left to a repair shop. Recharging the refrigerant, in particular, requires special equipment. For a professional consultation call (902) 404-3133

Belts and Hoses

Vehicle breakdown can be caused by the lack of inspecting hoses and belts. We take for granted that these parts of the vehicle will always be in good working order. There is a tremendous amount of heat buildup from an engine running on a continuous basis. This heat can cause belts and hoses to deteriorate over a period of time. Cracking and tears are common as well as leakage of fluids.

We will inspect these components' when your vehicle is brought in for service. To help you avoid a costly repair or if needed replace the broken components

CV Boots and Joints

A Constant Velocity Joints or CV joints are attached to each end of a drive shaft. CV Joints main function is to transfer the torque at a constant speed at steered wheels. CV Joints are in all front-wheel drive vehicles and are designed to last a prolonged period of time. There are protective rubber boots around the joint. They should be checked periodically for rips or tears. This can allow debris to get at the joint and cause damage. Once this happens, the grease comes out and the moisture and dirt come in, eventually causing the CV joint to fail due to lack of lubrication and corrosion.

Tip

If you’re only replacing 2 tires, we recommend putting them on the rear axle of your vehicle.
